Together with all country the Kharkov turbine plant workers shared joys and miseries, victories and defeats fallen to the Soviet Union people’s lot during hard times of the war.

Hundreds of advanced workers and engineers and technicians of the plant submitted an application with a request to send them to the front.

Year s will elapse, generation will come but the names of soldiers who died for the Motherland will remain in the memory of people.

Evacuation

First days all enterprises of Kharkov in undertime switched to manufacturing of defense production.

Plant stopped manufacturing of turbines, turbine-generators and synchronous compensators and started manufacturing defense production, manufactured mortars, repaired tanks.

At the end of summer 1941 front was approaching to Kharkov. Air raids of enemy aviation became more frequent. But in spite of this workers of the city courageously struggled for fulfilment and overfulfilment of production targets.

Military conditions  in October 1941 required to evacuate industrial enterprises from Kharkov.

Plan of evacuation was developed in advance.

Decision of State Defense Committee about evacuation of city was issued 19 September 1941.

From 20 September to 20 October from Kharkov were evacuated 320 echelons of plant equipment, 225 echelons with people, 56 echelons with hospitals.

Especially difficulties offered evacuation of turbine-generator plant. Considerable part of its equipment – are large machine tools, outsize for railroad transportation.

Over 1000 main workers of plant key trades were sent to east.

From the first days of war plant continued its activity, manufacturing production for front. Labour activity in its workshops stopped 21 October 1941 when hostility started at approaches to city.

Under decision of governmental bodies KhTGP during evacuation was divided into several parts. Equipment of workshop concerned with manufacturing of mortars (82 machine tools) were sent to plant “Communist” in Marskstadt (now Marks, Saratov region) for manufacturing of the same production. Foundry was brought to Kusin ironworks (Kusa, Chelyabinsk region). Main equipment and staff of plant were concentrated in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg). Unfinished high-rise building of Ural Turbine Plant 35 m height and 250 m length was handed over to employees of turbine Plant. 15 November 1941 here arrived 9 echelons of equipment and near 800 employees of plant, including 340 workers, 350 technical and engineering employees, 85 office-workers.

All echelons were stuffed with equipment in accordance with process at destination place. Together with machine tools to inland were sent backlogs, technical documentation, material stock and semi-finished products, which have no relation to remain part of manufacturing, power and crane equipment etc.

All equipment carefully lubricated and packed. Every echelon had necessary accessories for repair of cars on-the-way. For heads of echelons were appointed most skilled experts.

First months after evacuation KhTGP was not a plant in the full sense of the word. It was half-building, which was just beginning of its work for execution of orders of government. Construction works on high-rise building must be finished to 15 March  1942 erection works on small-size and middle-size equipment – to 1 April and on big-sized – to 25 April 1942.

In accordance with terms of finishing of construction and erection works annual   manufacturing program for release of commercial output was determined in volume  18 610 thous. rubles and - gross 20 mln. rubles. All production was of new type plant did not manufacture it previously.

In 1943 plant manufactured three turbogear sets with general capacity 41 thous. kW and stationary turbines with capacity 25 thous. kW in 2,7 times increased manufacturing of turbine spares for Power Plants and enterprises of defense, chemical and other areas of industry. Approved for plant annual program was executed on 103,8 percent. Production output in comparison with 1942 increased almost two times.

1943 was the year of radial turn in Great Patriotic War. Under powerful attacks of Red Army fascist horde retreat on west. Almost two thirds of soviet territory temporary occupied by were freed from hitlerite aggressors. 23 August 1943 Kharkov was free.

Aggressors almost two years caused robbery and brigandage in Kharkov. The destroyed everything what could not take to Germany.

In Kharkov and region aggressors left no enterprises which could be commissioned   without rehabilitation works. Just in Kharkov fascists destroyed 500 enterprises of state, republic and local industry. General losses caused to industry of city and region consisted over 30 mlrd. rubles.

During war between all spheres of industry most of all suffered turbine construction. Main plants, manufactured turbines in Leningrad, Kharkov, Taganrog after evacuation lost their  manufacturing capabilities. Partially rehabilitated turbine construction on east bases consisted only 10 percents of pre-war capacity. It could not meet requirements of country in Power machines and spares to them. Many plants, evacuated on east could not be procured with power without commissioning of new power plants.
